If you are registering a domain for a Pakistani business, you will almost certainly end up choosing between .pk and .com.pk. Both are official Pakistan country-code extensions managed through PKNIC, both appear on invoices in rupees, and both tell visitors you are a local business. They are not interchangeable, though β and picking the wrong one first can mean a longer address, a missed brand name, or a second registration later when someone else grabs the other extension.
This guide compares the two side by side: what each one signals, who each suits, the registration quirks that trip people up, when it makes sense to hold both, and how to connect whichever you choose to your hosting. If you have never registered a Pakistan domain before, our beginner's guide to .pk registration covers the full process; this article focuses on the choice between the two most common extensions.
Quick answer: which one should you register?
For most companies, shops and service businesses in Pakistan, .com.pk is the default. It is what people expect when they hear "a business domain", it reads naturally in print and on a shop sign, and it is the extension most Pakistani SMEs lead with.
Choose .pk when you want the shortest possible address β yourbrand.pk instead of yourbrand.com.pk β or when the matching .com.pk is already taken and the plain .pk is still free. Many established brands register both and use one as the main site while redirecting the other.
If you also sell outside Pakistan, consider a global .com alongside either Pakistan extension. A .com is listed at Rs 3,999 per year on our domains page; .pk and .com.pk are both Rs 4,699 for a two-year term as shown on the live pricing tables. Final availability and the exact checkout total are always confirmed before activation.
What .pk and .com.pk actually signal
Both extensions sit under Pakistan's country-code namespace. To a visitor in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad, either one says "this business is here". The difference is mostly about shape and expectation, not geography.
- .com.pk reads like a company address. Customers, suppliers and government forms often expect a business to use something that looks like a commercial domain β and .com.pk matches that mental model. It is the extension on most Pakistani company letterheads and invoice footers.
- .pk is shorter and cleaner. It works well for brands that want a memorable one-word URL, for personal projects with a national identity, or for businesses that treat the shorter name as their primary brand (think of how many international brands use their country code without a second label).
Neither extension magically ranks you on Google by itself. What helps is a clear site, fast hosting, useful content and consistent use of one canonical address β whichever extension you pick, stick with it in your marketing and email signatures.

Registration quirks: the Organization field and contact details
Registering through PKNIC is straightforward for the public extensions, but the form looks more corporate than a typical .com checkout. The detail that confuses solo founders and freelancers most often is the Organization field.
PKNIC expects an organization name on the registration. That does not mean you need a registered company or a trade licence for a standard .com.pk or .pk name. For a sole trader or freelancer, your own full name is acceptable in the Organization box β what matters is that the contact details are accurate and that the email address stays live for verification and renewal notices.
Keep these practical points in mind:
- Use a real postal address and phone number you control. That inbox is where renewal reminders and any registry queries land.
- Restricted extensions β
.edu.pk,.gov.pkand related government or education namespaces β need supporting documents and manual review. Standard .pk and .com.pk names do not, beyond accurate contact data. - Some registrations go through a short review before they are confirmed active. Plan a day or two of buffer before you announce a hard launch date.
- Overseas registrants may face different PKNIC fee rules than Pakistan-based customers. Keep your billing country accurate and ask support for a quote if you are ordering from outside Pakistan.
When to choose .com.pk
Lead with .com.pk if any of these describe you:
- You run a company, shop, clinic, agency or professional practice and want the extension customers expect on a business card.
- You are printing the domain on packaging, signage or official stationery and want it to read clearly as a commercial address.
- You are registering for the first time and both extensions are available β .com.pk is the safer default for a general business audience.
- Your brand name is common and you want the commercial label before someone else registers a competing .com.pk.
When to choose .pk
Lead with .pk if:
- Shorter URLs matter β social bios, SMS campaigns and word-of-mouth all benefit from dropping the extra
.comsegment. - The .com.pk you want is taken but the matching .pk is still free (check both before you commit).
- You are building a consumer brand where the domain itself is part of the identity, similar to how startups use short country-code names abroad.
- You already own the .com.pk and want the .pk as the primary public address, with the longer name redirecting.
When to register both
Holding both extensions is common, not wasteful, when the brand name matters to you. A competitor, a squatter or a confused customer only needs one gap to cause headaches.
Sensible patterns we see:
- Main site on .com.pk, redirect .pk β the usual choice for established SMEs that want the formal address in email (
sales@yourbrand.com.pk) while advertising the shorter URL. - Main site on .pk, redirect .com.pk β popular with brands that have invested in a short name and treat .com.pk as defensive registration.
- Register both at once, decide later β if the combined cost of two two-year terms fits your budget, securing both before launch is cheaper than chasing a release years later.
Point both names at the same site with a 301 redirect so search engines consolidate on one canonical address. Pick one extension for email and marketing, and use it consistently.
Also consider a .com if you expect international customers or investors who type .com by habit. That is a separate decision from .pk vs .com.pk β our website setup guide covers pairing domains with hosting.
Renewals, terms and what happens if you forget
Pakistan domains are not annual impulse buys. PKNIC bills in two-year periods, and the registration price shown on our site reflects that minimum. Longer terms are available up to the registry limit; renewing early is always safer than waiting until the expiry date.
Treat renewal like rent on your address:
- Watch expiry badges in Dashboard β Domains and pay renewal invoices in Billing before the date passes.
- Keep the registrant email working β if it bounces, you may miss the reminder entirely.
- Letting a domain lapse can take your website and email offline and, after grace periods, release the name back to the market.
Our domain renewal checklist walks through the full timeline. If you already own a .pk or .com.pk elsewhere and want everything under one PK Hosting account, contact support β .pk transfers follow PKNIC rules and need coordination rather than a generic EPP-only flow.
Pointing your domain at PK Hosting
Once the name is registered, connect it to your site. The usual approach for customers who want PK Hosting to manage DNS is to set these nameservers at the registrar:
- ns1.pkhosting.com
- ns2.pkhosting.com
Set them under Dashboard β Domains β Manage β Nameservers after the domain appears on your account. DNS changes can take from a few minutes up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide.
Already using Cloudflare or another DNS provider? Leave their nameservers in place and add only the A and CNAME records shown on your hosting service page β both paths work, and the dashboard DNS helper lists the exact values.
Every shared hosting plan includes free SSL; issue the certificate from the dashboard once DNS resolves to your hosting. Mailboxes on your domain (hello@yourbrand.com.pk) are created in the same panel β see our guide to business email with your own domain for the setup sequence.
Pairing your domain with hosting
A domain without hosting is just a reserved name. Most new businesses pair registration with a shared plan on the same account so DNS, SSL and email live in one place:
- Personal β Rs 699/month β one site, enough for a portfolio or small business brochure.
- Business β Rs 1,999/month β multiple sites and more headroom for a growing shop or agency.
- Professional β Rs 3,999/month β highest shared resources when traffic or staging workflows need it.
Annual billing is often shown as ten times the monthly rate on plan pages. Pay by JazzCash, EasyPaisa, bank transfer or card. There is no free trial β you choose a term, pay the invoice, and the service is provisioned after payment clears. First-time shared hosting orders may use promo code WELCOME10 for 10% off eligible hosting-only orders at checkout; domains are excluded.
Compare plans on the hosting page or go straight to checkout when you are ready. Questions about which extension fits your business? Email support@pkhosting.com or call (042) 35692952 β our office is at 231-B Main Boulevard, Commercial Broadway, Sector B, Phase 8 DHA, Lahore.
The short version
.com.pk is the default for most Pakistani businesses. .pk wins when you want the shortest URL or the .com.pk is gone. Register both when the brand name is worth protecting. Fill the Organization field honestly β your name is fine if you are a sole trader β renew before expiry, and point DNS to ns1.pkhosting.com and ns2.pkhosting.com when you want us to manage records. Search available names on the PK domain registration page or the wider domains catalogue, then connect the name to a hosting plan and go live.
